Torrejón de Ardoz is the only city in Spain that has already started installing air conditioning in all the classrooms of public schools in the city, in a historic commitment to public education. The Mayor of Torrejón de Ardoz, Alejandro Navarro Prieto, and the Councilor for Works, Urban Cleaning, Administration, and Contracting, Valeriano Díaz, presented this pioneering initiative at La Zarzuela school, along with its director, Raquel Fernández. This educational center has already begun the installation throughout the year 2025 and 2026 of air conditioning in all the classrooms of the 21 public schools in Torrejón. Our city will be the only one in Spain to implement this measure with the aim of avoiding heat, as was done by installing awnings in the previous term.
Torrejón de Ardoz, March 26, 2025. A total of 87 new climate machines will be installed at La Zarzuela Primary School, and a new centralized and intelligent control system will be implemented, allowing the City Council to monitor in real-time the operating status of the new facilities and the correct comfort level of the users.
In addition, with the installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling machines and the use of compact units with low noise levels and safety, the number of hours of use of conventional boilers is reduced, reducing gas dependence, with a reduction of 930,119.68 kWh of thermal energy.
Greenhouse gas emissions are also reduced, with a reduction of 689 tons of CO2 avoided. BMS systems are installed for intelligent centralized control of the temperature conditions in schools by the City Council.
Special attention has been paid to the planning of the works and the specific needs of educational centers to minimize the impact on the development of classes.
The Mayor, Alejandro Navarro Prieto, met at La Zarzuela Primary School with the directors of the city’s public schools, detailing the start of the air conditioning installation in the centers. Also present were the director of the Madrid-East Territorial Area, Marcos Rafael Moreno, directors of centers from other municipalities such as Paracuellos, Ajalvir, Serracines, and Daganzo.
«In total, 7 million euros will be invested in the 21 public schools in the city, including the Iker Casillas Special Education School. The 1,630 air conditioning units will be energy-efficient, providing both cooling and heating, and the necessary splits will be installed according to the surface area of each classroom, operating with the support of the electricity generated by the solar panels installed in the centers to ensure that the vast majority of them operate with alternative renewable energies,» highlighted Alejandro Navarro Prieto.
The Mayor added, «Without a doubt, with pioneering investments like this, we have managed to make Torrejón one of the trendiest cities in Spain and a benchmark in all these matters.»
