On Sunday, February 2nd, the free activities organized by the Municipal Council to celebrate one of Torrejon’s most rooted and succulent traditions with the Tortilla Day will take place at the fairground. There will be a free distribution of this typical dish, as well as a diverse program that includes the tortilla contest, an exhibition by the local police’s canine group in Torrejón de Ardoz at the Bullring, and the Tortilla Train, among other initiatives.
On January 31st, 2025, in Torrejón de Ardoz, preparations have been made for a series of family-friendly activities organized by the Municipal Council, with a focus on children. There will be an area for children, Globexia, target shooting, firefighters, a parade, dance performances, chess, and a new exhibition of the local police’s canine unit in Torrejón de Ardoz at the Bullring, starting at 11:30 for a day of fun.
Even if you don’t feel like cooking that day, starting at 1:00 p.m., there will be a free distribution of tortillas and dessert, with thousands of servings and apron giveaways.
For the little ones, from 11:00 to 19:00, the Tortilla Train will be running, and there will also be an area for children with inflatables, mini karts, mini golf, and workshops.
«On the first Sunday of February, we celebrate the activities organized by the Municipal Council to commemorate this Torrejon tradition like Tortilla Day. A festive occasion that serves as an excuse to gather with family and friends around a tortilla, along with other dishes that people prepare, as many Torrejon residents are experts in turning picnics into elaborate feasts,» recalled the mayor, Alejandro Navarro Prieto.
«Whether you prefer your tortilla in sandwiches, with or without onions, the truth is that Tortilla Day is deeply ingrained in our habits, and the coinciding activities organized by the Municipal Council make it a weekend of celebration,» explained the Councilor for Equality and Holidays, María Eugenia Gil.
The mayor added, «It’s important that the spirit of these celebrations is upheld: savoring a delicious tortilla, having fun, and coming together as Torrejon residents. Additionally, we respect the resolution passed by the Municipal Council on July 5, 2017, to promote this tradition proposed by citizens and approved by both the PP and PSOE.»
In the tortilla contest, all residents over 16 years old can participate. Here are the participation guidelines:
• Registration will be from 12:30 to 14:30.
• The jury will award prizes of 200, 100, and 75 euros. The awards ceremony will take place at 3:30 pm on the stage.
• To compete, participants need to present a tortilla and its written recipe between 12:30 and 14:30.
• It is essential for the tortillas to include basic ingredients like potatoes. The originality of the tortilla will be judged based on ingredients, flavor, and presentation.
• The jury will consist of a Municipal Council technician, a representative from Torrejón’s Hostal Group, and a resident of Torrejón de Ardoz. The results will be announced on stage at 15:00.
The mayor advised, «As always, we recommend using public transportation, but for those using private vehicles, parking will be available at the fairground itself,» concluding with appreciation for «the collaboration of all entities involved in organizing the activities, without which Tortilla Day wouldn’t be as enjoyable.»
